There are a myriad of colours, lengths and textures for every
occasion and mood.

The wig needs to suit the occasion.
I wear a wig sometimes to an event. It is usually my long ponytail which I wind up into a loose bun. Being the same colour as my dark brown natural hair means that my usual makeup is fine.

If, however the blond one is coming out, my makeup needs to be heavier, as I can look washed out. Because it is so far from my actual hair, it takes a bit of getting used to, although I love the contrast from my brunette self.

Consider the weather.
More humid areas like Sydney are great for short wigs or having your long hair in an up-do. The cap itself can be quite warm, so considering the heat is a good idea. In winter, my blond wig worn long actually keeps my head warm!

Ensure the length and texture suit your face and personality.
Face shape and size is important. Below are some suggestions for wig styles to suit your face.

This face shape is longer than it is wide, with a rounded jaw and curved shape. There are no sharp angles and both the jaw and forehead are rounded. Because your face is balanced and in even proportion, you can wear almost any style.
You will look your best in styles that are off the face, accentuating the
face shape.
Avoid styles with a heavy fringe (bangs) or lots of forward direction which may add weight to your face.

Your face appears wide at the temples and hairline, narrowing to a
small delicate chin.
Your best choices are chin length or longer styles, side-parted and swept forward layers around the upper face. A chin length bob creates a balanced look by giving fullness where you need it.  You can wear shorter styles, but you may need to choose those that add weight in the back nape area.
Avoid short, full styles with tapered necklines which can make the upper face appear top-heavy.

Your face is approximately twice as wide as it is long.  You have a round chin and hairline.  The widest point is at the cheeks and ears.
The best wigs are those that add fullness and height at the crown.  Look for off-center parts.  You can wear short styles that have a swept back direction or styles that are longer than chin length.
Avoid chin length hair with a rounded line that mirrors the face’s
circular shape.

Your face is about as wide as it is long.  You have a strong, square jawline and hairline.
You suit short to medium length styles, especially those with waves or roundness around the face. Styles with layers and wispy looks will soften the square look of your face.

Your face is longer than it is wide.  It is about the same width at the forehead and just below the cheekbones.  Your face appears long and slender.
Styles that are short or medium length will minimize the elongation of
your face.
It is best to stay with styles that are shoulder length or shorter.  Layers add softness to the straight lines of your face.  Look for side parts, to minimize the geometric shape.

Pros of Human Hair Wigs

Look very like natural hair, can be messy or windblown which helps this feature;
You can style your wig using your usual appliances;
They have lace fronts and hand-tied additions, increasing their resemblance to real hair.

Cons of Human Hair Wigs

A wig made of human hair can become damaged and split over time from repeated brushing, heat styling and colouring;
Human hair wigs are more expensive than synthetic ones and do not usually come pre-styled;
Just like real hair, human hair wigs need to be washed, deep-conditioned and restyled frequently.

Pros of Synthetic Wigs

Great for women  who don’t want to style their hair on a daily basis, they are usually pre-styled;
Less expensive  and are becoming more sophisticated and similar to human hair wigs;
Synthetic wigs retain their colour permanently, human hair wigs will fade.

Cons of Synthetic Wigs

Depending on the quality of the wig, the fibres may be obviously artificial;
They tend to be indelicate and more coarse;
Some women find the permanent set to be a bonus, whilst others like the variety of styling a human hair wig;

I love to use a wig to have fun with the different looks!
